Security researchers have found a new exploit kit in in the last months, this exploit kit makes use of vulnerability CVE-2018-8174.
The vulnerability used in the Spelevo Exploit kit has been dubbed ‘CVE-2018-8174’. This vulnerability abuses a vulnerability in the VBScript engine.
The human readable name for CVE-2018-8174 is ‘Windows VBScript Engine Remote Code Execution Vulnerability’.
The Microsoft.com description on ‘CVE-2018-8174’:
A remote code execution vulnerability exists in the way that the VBScript engine handles objects in memory. The vulnerability could corrupt memory in such a way that an attacker could execute arbitrary code in the context of the current user. An attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the current user. If the current user is logged on with administrative user rights, an attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerability could take control of an affected system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.
Spelevo Exploit Kit
The Spelevo exploit kit seems to have similarities to SPL EK, which is a different exploit kit. According to research performed by malware.dontneedcoffee.com, SPL EK and Spelevo EK make use of the same vulnerability.
What does Spelevo Exploit kit do?
According to Checkpoint, the Spelevo exploit kit, once executed successfully, allows the attacker to gain remote execution access.
Spelevo exploit kit is a web exploit kit that operates by delivering malicious payload to the victim’s computer. Successful infection will allow the attacker to download additional malware to the target.Checkpoint
