It is claimed that the LockBit ransomware attacked and encrypted the network of the Italian tax office (L’Agenzia delle Entrate).
With more than 100 GB of sensitive data (including company documents, scans, financial statements and contracts) that will be released if the tax agency does not comply with the ransom demand by August 1.
The Italian tax officials denied the violations, claiming “alleged data theft” and seeking clarification from Sogei (Società Generale d’Informatica) SpA, the public company of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, which is in charge of the hacked technological infrastructure.
Sogei SpA also manages the IT infrastructure used by other Italian departments, including the Ministries of Justice, Interior and Education, the Attorney General and the Ministry of Finance.
Moreover, following technical investigations, Sogei has questioned the possibility of a cyber attack
At the same time, for some reason, Sogei SpA added that it is currently implementing a joint investigation, which is coordinated by the Italian National Cyber Security Agency and the police.
