When we hear about penetration testing and hacking, we usually talk about Linux operating system. However, we can also install the necessary Hacking applications and tools on a Windows operating system with Commando VM.
When it comes to the best operating systems for hacking, Kali Linux ( which we have covered extensively ) is always the first choice for pentesters and “ethical hackers”.
However, Kali because it is a distribution based on Debian Linux and using it without learning the basics of Linux usually leads to ridiculous situations. Also, installing hacking tools on Windows is quite problematic for most users.
To improve the situation, FireEye has released an automated installer called Commando VM .
What is Commando VM?
This is a fully customized distribution of security tools for use on a Windows operating system. It is especially useful when the environment we want to control its security is exclusively Servers and Workstations based on Windows.

We recommend using the Commando VM on a Virtual Machine such as the Virtual Box in which you should have Windows 7 or later installed. We recommend that your existing Windows operating system be intact from the installation of the tools.
Hacking tools available in Commando VM
Commando VM uses Boxstarter, Chocolatey and MyGet as we said to install all the required software and provides many hacking tools and utilities. The list includes more than 140 tools, such as:
- Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT)
- Nmap
- Wireshark
- Mimikatz
- Hashcat
- Sysinternals
- Covenant
- PoshC2
- WMImplant
- WMIOps
- Burp Suite
- OWASP Zap
