Beware of ‘Press Allow to Verify that you are not a robot’ checks

Beware of ‘Press Allow to verify that you are not a robot’ checks. These messages are not captcha messages, and their goal is to make sure that you click on allow.

Fake are you are robot check

In the picture above, you can see one of the examples. This site is trying to gain access via my browser by asking me to allow the website to show notifications and messages in my browser.

In the background, you can also see a picture which holds the message:

Press allow to verify that you are not robot

This message has been setup to lure the user to click on verify. Nothing will be verified, the only thing that will happen, is that you will, in this case, allow the website to show messages and notifications in your browser.

Why is this bad?

This is dangerous as this website has no purpose or service which I want to see in my browser, additionally, when you click on deny, it will redirect you to a different site, which will ask you the same.

Same message, but this time in Dutch

The message this time:

Druk op toestaan om te controleren of u geen robot bent

The danger of these sites is that they have no good interest for you, their main goal is to monetize something, this can be your data, or your time.

Messages and notifications which are shown, can pop-up at any time, without you having to visit the website, or having the website in an active browsing tab. This means that at any moment, you can get a malicious message or notification, which will try to lure you to a malware site.

Don’t Press Allow to Verify that you are not a robot

Well, first make sure that once you get a message in your screen, that you take a moment to read the message. Once it is clear what the pop-up window is asking from you, you can continue to click on accept or deny.

Make sure that you have an antivirus installed on your system, and that you have updated it to the latest available version.
