Attacks on Australia: Optus and the Medibank hack

In this post, I will provide you a view on how millions of Australian residents got impacted by cyber attacks in 2022.

To provide you a quick timeline, on the 4th of October 2022, the Australian telecom giant Optus confirmed that nearly 2.1 million Australian accounts had been breached, some days after that, on the 13th of October 2022, the major Australian health insurance provider Medibank got hit by a ransomware attack, resulting in the compromise of 9.7 million Australian accounts.

On the 7th of November 2022, the Australian Medibank declared that they refuse to pay ransom for the data theft. They state that paying the ransom could encourage cybercriminals to directly extort Medibank customers.

The threat actor behind the Medibank ransomware attack is allegedly the ‘BlogXX ransomware‘ gang.
