Iran plans to build 10-MW pool-type reactor

The Head of Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Fereydoun Abbasi said the country has built and tested the first fuel complex with 3.5% fuel enrichment in smaller scale.

Abbasi told ISNA the complex working with 3.5% enriched fuel rods has been constructed for the first time and tested in the country, adding some rods have been placed in a system with dimensions similar to those of fuel plate complex in Tehran reactor, reported ISNA

Tehran reactor fuel is pool-type fuel which is 20% enriched and the dimensions of the new complex are similar to Tehran reactor's dimensions.

Abbasi referred to the objective of building such fuel, saying," We first wanted to build fuel rod and perform non-destructive tests on it. The issue is usually used for testing fuel and a test for making fuel for huge power plant. The experience is a preliminary step to build Arak research reactor's fuel."

He stressed the fuel complex had been constructed over the past 6 months.

Abbasi also referred to producing dummy fuel in Arak reactor, noting the production line of the fuel in 40 megawatt Arak reactor has been launched.

Also regarding another Iranian reactor, he said, "We plan to build another pool-type reactor with the power of 10 mega-watt and we will inform the IAEA of its details soon."
