Anonymous targets FOX News, Facebook and Operation Cashback

Anonymous, the loose-knit web "hacktavist" group that has been associated with taking down and attacking the Church of Scientology, is apparently planning on launching a coordinated attack on the Fox News website because of the way the network has covered theOccupy Wall Street movement, according to a video posted on YouTube.

"Anonymous intends on destroying the Fox News website because their continued right wing conservative propaganda can no longer be tolerated," a computer-generated voice says in the video. "They use words such as "filthy," "disgusting" and "dirty" to describe the protesters. Since they will not stop belittling the occupiers, we will simply shut them down."

The video specifically calls out Fox News host Sean Hannity. According to Media Matters, Sean Hannity on October 3 said called the protestors' rhetoric and behavior "destructive."

The voice in the video says that the attack will be carried out on November 5.

CNET explains the significance of the date:

The date--November 5--is commonly referred to as Guy Fawkes day in honor of the Brit who tried to blow up parliament in the Gunpowder Plot of 1604. Fawkes was immortalized in "V For Vendetta," a 2006 movie about a freedom fighter who uses terrorist tactics against a totalitarian society. A mask from the movie has become a symbol for Anonymous.

The video was posted to a YouTube account with 36 other videos, nearly all of which appear to be related to Anonymous. But the YouTube channel does not seem to be very popular; second to this video, which is available below, the video with the most views has been watched only 5,500 times.

@YourAnonNews, a Twitter account that appears to be associated with Anonymous, tweeted a link to the video on October 23.

Anonymous has been active in the OWS movement since before it began last month. The groupthreatened to "take...down [the NYPD] from the internet" following the clashes between the NYPD and Occupy Wall Street protesters in September, and ABC News reported earlier this month that the group threatened to launch a web attack on the New York Stock Exchange.

According to Venturebeat Anonymous recently released identifying information -- including home addresses and social security numbers -- of 1,000 law enforcement and government employees.
