How to install Kali Linux 2.0

Kali Linux has been around for years and it is one of the most used distributions among cyber security professionals and ethical hackers. The Kali Linux 2.0 distribution can be downloaded for free from the official kali.org website which is funded by Offensive Security.

Getting started with the Kali Linux 2.0 installation

The Kali Linux distribution does not require an installation, but you can choose to install the Kali Linux distribution on any environment which meets the minimum Kali Linux requirements.

In this how to install the latest Kali Linux tutorial, we are going to focus on installing the Kali Linux 2.0 operating system in an VirtualBox virtual machine.

Our Kali Linux operating system will run on the following specs:

  • 4096MB memory
  • 30GB virtual hard drive
  • 2 processors
  • Networking: Bridged Adapter

And we have downloaded the official Kali Linux 2.0 ISO from the official Kali.org website.

How to install Kali Linux 2.0

Now we expect that you have setup the VirtualBox environment , so we will continue from the part where you will be prompted to run the Kali Linux 2.0 operating system in live mode or if you want to install the Kali Linux operating system.

The screenshot above shows the first step once the Kali Linux operating system has been loaded. You can run the Kali Linux operating system in live mode by pressing enter on the menu object which has been shown in the screenshot above.

But if you want to install the Kali Linux operating system, you will have to follow the menu object which has been selected in the Kali Linux screenshot below.

The next screen which you will see is the Kali Linux setup language selection, in this menu you can select the language which you want to use during the installation of Kali Linux 2.0

For the tutorial, we have selected the English language.

In the following step, we will need to specify our location. The location is used by the setup to determine which server is needed to fetch additional Kali Linux updates and patches.

In the next step we will need to specify our keyboard keymap. You can continue by selecting the default option which is the ‘American English’ option.

In the “configure the network” step, you will be able to specify the hostname of the system. In this case we have chosen ‘cwz’, but you simply provide any random hostname which you prefer.
