Moroccan spying in the Rotterdam-Rijnmond Police Corps

The Hague, September 8, 2010 - The court in The Hague sentenced a 39-year-old former information detective from the police of Rotterdam-Rijnmond. The court sentenced him to the maximum community service of 240 hours. This is because he passed information from the computer systems of the police to a third party.

The third party promised him good prospects in the future.

The ex-detective has in February 2006 to March 2008 at the request of a member of the Moroccan Embassy in the Netherlands people checked in the computer systems of the police and the information passed to the embassy staff. The embassy staff had told the detective that interrogation of the computer to do with terrorism, arms trafficking or actions against the King of Morocco.

The court found that the former detective, given the seriousness of the offense, an unconditional sentence should get. Like the prosecutor, the court a sentence in this case, however, an excessive punishment, but an appropriate community service.

The court in favor of the man taken into account that the information he has requested, although no state secrets contained personal or other special character was.
Also, the court weighed the traced persons not yet been harmed by the fact that the man was questioned about them and passed.
Finally, the court took into account the fact that the man by doing his job as a detective in the police information is lost and that the matter was discussed extensively in the media.

There are according to the court against a number of aggravating aspects. Thus, the man knowingly acted contrary to his official duty and in breach of the confidentiality agreement signed by him. He also by providing the information privacy of persons seriously violated.
