Cyberwarfare: Iran can counter any US cyber attack

A senior Iranian lawmaker says the Islamic Republic has the essential capabilities and the potential to respond to and counter any cyber threat posed by the United States.

Iran enjoys “appropriate and adequate” scientific capacities and the operational systems to counter psychological ploys employed by the US in the cyberspace, a member of the Majlis Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy, Avaz Heidarpour, said on Sunday.

He pointed to the US efforts to influence public opinion in the cyberspace and emphasized that Washington would naturally resort to defensive and media tactics when it realizes that the time and locations are not favorable to wage battles in the Middle East.

The legislator, however, pointed out that thanks to their prudence, the Iranian nation would not allow the US and Western media to gain influence on them.

Heidarpour reiterated that Iran is fully prepared to respond to any foreign threat and possesses the capability to defend against a cyber threat or launch a cyber attack as appropriate.

In early October 2010, Iran announced that it had detected and thwarted a cyber attack by the Stuxnet worm, which was reportedly designed to infect Iranian industrial and nuclear computer systems.

The Stuxnet worm, first indentified by Iranian officials in June 2010, is a malware designed to infect computers using Siemens Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) -- a control system favored by industries that manage water supplies, oil rigs and power plants.

Iranian experts say the worm may have been created by a state-sponsored organization in the United States or Israel with the specific aim of targeting particular control software used in the Iranian industrial sector, including the ones used in the Bushehr plant -- Iran's first nuclear power plant.
