In February the family of 15-year-old Blake Robbins filed a lawsuit against Lower Merion School District near Philadelphia, alleging that the school district activated the web-cam in the student's school-issued MacBook.
The school district admitted that it did have the capacity to remotely turn on web-cams. They said that they did so 42 times in the past years. The Robbins family claims that an assistant principal accused Blake of using drugs. And gave him as evidence a photograph of him taking it in his own home via the Mac's web-cam. Blake said that the pills he used were Mike and Ike candies.
The software used on these Macs was a product called LANRev published by Pole Position Software. LANRev is a remote management tool that enables administrators to manage laptops. To make sure that the software is up-to-date.
Two IT employees at the school district have been put on administrative leave. And pictures from the webcams on the school-issued computers have been turned over to the local police departement.
